A Letter to the Community: The Proposed Community Fund

Around 2016 the course's owner wrote to residents proposing a $50 monthly fee per home in exchange for golf discounts and access to the grounds.

An undated letter signed by Kevin Blum, as owner and operator of Brierwood Golf Club, asked residents for help keeping the course going. It says he bought the course “two years ago,” which, since the sale was in July 2014, places the letter at about 2016, a year before the course closed.

He wrote that his goals for the course were “a bit lofty for just one imagination and effort,” and that he needed more support from local residents. He noted that he had seen residents walking, cycling and fishing on the course and using it as a dog park, and said the course was more than just a golf course.

The proposal was a Community Fund. Each home-site in Brierwood would contribute $50 per month, and everyone in a contributing home-site would become a “community member.” Members could play 18 holes for the lower of $20 or the going price, and could use the course for walking, biking, fishing and other activities outside golfing hours, taking responsibility for themselves, family and guests.

The money, he wrote, would be held in a fund administered by the community and spent as a community board directed, for things such as road repairs, landscaping of common areas and the front entrance, with one resident in charge of the funds and open to audit at any time.

He closed by saying he did not want to lose the course but that selling it was his only other option, with the uncertainty of an investor buying it and building houses and roads. In 2017 he told the Sun News that the course was not drawing enough rounds, and that he needed community support. No coverage found for this website shows that the fund was adopted, and the course closed on June 1, 2017.
