September 15, 2017: The Brierwood Association Forms
With the course gone, residents created a voluntary association to keep neighbors informed and to organize beautification, safety patrols and community activities.
On September 15, 2017, a little over three months after the golf course closed, residents formed the Brierwood Association. Its stated purpose was simple: to keep the community informed of important news and information pertaining to the community.
That purpose was shaped by circumstance. For fifty years the golf club had been the natural place for news to travel. With the clubhouse closed, Brierwood needed a new way to talk to itself, and a voluntary association with a website of its own was the answer.
The Association organized three working groups. The Community Beautification Group took on the front entrance area as a community improvement project and maintains it today. The Safety and Security Group began citizen patrols of Brierwood. The Community Activities Group plans and organizes group events, and it staged the first big one within weeks.
What the Association is not is just as important. Brierwood is a non-HOA community governed by the 1969 covenants. The Association has no power to assess dues or enforce rules; it informs, organizes and advocates. Its by-laws are published on this website.
The Association also became the community's voice at Town Hall. When the Town of Shallotte scheduled hearings on the golf course property in 2025, it was the Association's website that carried the dates to residents.
