Queen's Grant Circle Came First
The first lots ever mapped in Brierwood were on Queen's Grant Circle, and they were labeled Section 2. Their sale paid for the first nine holes.
Ask a newcomer where Brierwood began and most would guess the front entrance on Brierwood Road. The recorded maps say otherwise. The first section of lots surveyed and mapped as residential property in Brierwood was on Queen's Grant Circle.
That map was recorded on May 1, 1969, and it gave the Queen's Grant area a name that still puzzles people: Section 2 of Brierwood Golf Club Estates. Section 1, along Brierwood Road, would not be recorded for another three years.
The reason is money. Dr. Ward's original intent was the golf course, not a subdivision. But a golf course is expensive to build, and the community's records say that sales of residential lots in the Queen's Grant area provided the funds needed to finish the first nine holes by the end of 1969.
In other words, the homes made the course possible, and the course made the homes desirable. That relationship would define Brierwood for the next half century.
Today the lots on Queen's Grant Circle are among the oldest in the community. Some of the houses there date from the earliest years of Brierwood, when the fairways were brand new and the pines that now shade the streets were still young.
